Dear Alumni and Friends:
Your loyalty to the College has always been exceptional, and in 2008,
you demonstrated that commitment by contributing more than $136,000 in the annual phonathon, setting a record for the third straight year. Phonathon gifts not only fund scholarships, they provide financial assistance to clubs and organizations so that our students can attend conferences and take part in regional and national competitions.
For the second year, College of Agriculture alumni set sail while raising money for the general scholarship fund. We cruised the Caribbean in 2008 and the Florida coast and the Bahamas in 2009, raising more than $3,000 for scholarships in those cruises.
Other Giving
We look forward to soon announcing the successful completion of fundraising for the Kentucky Children’s Garden at The Arboretum. Construction of the garden is under way, and we encourage you to visit The Arboretum and watch the progress.
Muhlenberg County will soon have an extension agent in fine arts, thanks to several local banks and organizations that have contributed and pledged more than $390,000 to fund the position. We extend special thanks to the Felix E. Martin Jr. Foundation for investing $150,000 in this program.
Finally, alumni and friends are among those supporting the Kentucky Agricultural Leadership Development Program as the College seeks to match funds provided by the Kentucky Agricultural Development Board. The board established an endowment to provide support in perpetuity for the program formerly funded through Phillip Morris. The mission of the program is to identify, develop, and motivate Kentuckians for effective leadership in agricultural and rural communities.
Working with You
We appreciate the continued support of the Kentucky Legislature. Thanks to the legislature’s 2008 appropriation, the College has moved forward with plans for the expansion and renovation of UK’s Livestock Disease Diagnostic Center. These improvements enable us to better serve all of Kentucky, including the state’s livestock producers.
Hosting meetings of the legislature’s Interim Joint Committee on Agriculture and the Kentucky Agricultural Development Board during Roundup week is becoming an annual occurrence. We look forward to welcoming these and other groups to campus in October during the 2009 Roundup. Please mark your calendars now for Oct. 24 and join us for one of UK’s longest-running traditions—Ag Roundup.
We appreciate the continued support of Kentucky’s commodity groups and the Kentucky Farm Bureau, the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, the Kentucky State Fair Board, the Governor’s Office, and the Governor’s Office of Agricultural Policy. Our relationships with these groups are invaluable to UK and to the future of Kentucky agriculture.
