2003 Development Annual Report
Looking to the Future with a New Campaign Goal
Both the University and the College of Agriculture have set new fund-raising goals, heartened by the success of the first five years of the Universitys first-ever capital giving campaign.
The new phase of the capital campaign will run through December 2007.
Weve got momentum, and we want to keep raising money, said Bill Sheets, the Colleges development director. We recognized in the first five years of the campaign that there are a lot of people we had not yet identified or worked with who are interested in making gifts.
Scott Smith, dean of the College of Agriculture, has led his administrative staff in earmarking seven program areas for the $40 million the College hopes to raise.
These areas include:
- Investing in future leaders: More scholarship money than ever is needed as costs go up and enrollment grows, diluting scholarship funds available. The goal for the scholarship endowment is $10 million.
- Animal health and security: The College is already recognized internationally for its research in equine diseases and as a leader in the beef industry. Kentuckys pioneering efforts in electronic tracking of cattle are positioning the College as a leader as national concerns increase about the safety of the U.S. food supply. By reaching a goal of $8 million, we can sustain and strengthen our capabilities in this area.
- Outreach and leadership across the commonwealth: The Colleges programs stretch to every county, and every Kentuckian has access to our 4-H camps, research and education centers, and Robinson Forest. By raising the slated $6 million for this area, we can provide income to upgrade facilities, bolster resources for agents, and seed the leadership development activities that can spark economic resurgence on the local level.
- Sustainable food systems: The College continues to build a name in food sciences, and Kentuckys food industry continues to grow and offer new opportunities for Kentucky agricultural products. We need $6 million to expand our educational and research capacity in food science and technology, food safety, and food economics and policy. This money will help us prepare our students to take a role in this growing food industry in Kentucky and foster the knowledge base that will help it flourish here.
- New opportunities in plant science: Natural products and plant bioengineering are reshaping Kentucky agriculture in the 21st century, offering new possibilities for farming that were unknown 20 years ago. By raising $4 million for this area, we can expand our support for exceptional scientists and teachers in a revolutionary, cutting-edge field.
- Natural resources and the environment: The College is already successful with its programs in wildlife biology, forest ecology, soil and water quality, entomology, land use planning, and natural resource conservation and management. By raising $4 million, largely for more endowed chairs and professorships, we will increase our ability to learn how to best sustain and use our resources.
- Communities, families, and youth: Both the School of Human Environmental Sciences and the Department of Community and Leadership Development are new entities within the College. They have added to our ability to address the needs of people and communities. We also continue to adapt our extension efforts in family and consumer sciences programs as the needs of our clientele change. With a $2 million goal, we can improve facilities and provide more support for faculty and staff in this area.

Message to Alumni and Friends
The first phase of the University of Kentucky Campaign is now complete. This five-year effort to raise $58.5 million for the College of Agriculture has been a wonderful success! In fact, the College raised more than $62 million during the campaign, which is more than 10 percent of the Universitys $600 million goal.
Our success is due to the profound dedication and enthusiasm of our alumni, friends, community partners, faculty, staff, and administration. Together, through your philanthropy, volunteerism, and hard work, you have provided the leadership for realizing the College of Agricultures strategic goals of providing world-class opportunities in discovery, learning, and extension.
I am also pleased to report that we have had continued success with our annual fund phonathon. In total, 1,419 phonathon gifts were received by February 16, 2004.With gratitude, we have watched many alumni and friends become involved with the Scovell Societythe lifeblood and heart of the Colleges philanthropic community. All of them did so by making donations totaling $10,000 or more during their philanthropic association with the College.
As you may know, all of the groundbreaking developments brought about through the Campaignnew programs for learning, new chairs, professorships, and scholarshipswill require higher levels of annual private support. That is why UK President Lee T. Todd Jr. is now asking us to continue our efforts to grow private support during another four years of campaigning with the goal of an additional $400 million, pushing the total for UKs nine-year campaign to $1 billion.
Correspondingly, Dean Scott Smith has asked that the College of Agriculture raise an additional $40 million, which will maintain our 10 percent portion ($100 million) of the Universitys overall goal.
With your help, we will achieve the world-class distinction in the work to which we are committed for the University, the state of Kentucky, and beyond.
Thank you,
William M. Sheets

Lincoln Trail Alums Set Up Endowment

Organizers of the endowment included (from the left, front row): Kenneth Hayden 53, Mike King 76 (back row): Leslie Stith 81, Dennis Parrett 81, Bill McCloskey III 84. Not pictured: Glenn Stith 74.
For years, alumni in the Lincoln Trail Area have provided a scholarship for a local student entering the UK College of Agriculture by raising money at an auction. Now, they have taken a bold, new step.
We wanted to establish an endowment we could build on every year, said Dennis Parrett, one of the Lincoln Trail Area alumni who helped spearhead fund raising for the Lincoln Trail Area UK Agriculture Alumni Association Scholarship Endowment Fund. He is also current state ag alumni association president.
Lincoln Trail alumni kicked off this new effort at a breakfast meeting in the spring of 2003. One thing we stressed was that there wasnt a person in the room who couldnt say that the Ag College hadnt had a major impact on what they do. I believe one of our duties is to give back to those things that have made a difference in our lives, Parrett said.
The alumni set an original goal of raising $30,000 for the endowment, which would enable them to continue to provide the $1,500 scholarship they have given in the past, only now from endowment income. They closed in easily on that goal, so they plan to raise even more money.
A New Fund Honors Charlie Byers
Charles W. Byers, a faculty member in UKs agricultural education program for more than 38 years, has retired. Let him know how much he meant to you by giving to the Charles W. Byers Endowed Scholarship Fund.
This fund will provide financial aid to Kentucky high school students studying agricultural education at UK. An anonymous donor has pledged $50,000 to the fund if the College is able to match that amount in gifts from its alumni. You can help us reach that goal.
This fund is an appropriate way to honor Byers, who touched many lives while he was in the College.
He was academic adviser to many studentssometimes nearly 150 a year. When they needed other kinds of advice, they often turned to Byers for that as well.
Dinner invitations at the Byers home went out to hundreds of students over the years.
Byers was also the faculty speaker to parents at UK freshman orientation sessions for 17 years. I think parents, when they heard him speak, felt that having their children at UK was going to be all right, said Rod Tulloch, longtime friend and colleague in the ag education program.
Dr. Byers is my teacher, adviser, mentor, and friend, said Jay Jackman 85, now executive director of the National Association for Agricultural Educators. He has had a tremendous positive influence on my life.
To contribute to the fund in Charlie Byers name, make your check payable to the
University of Kentucky, designate it for the Charles W. Byers Endowed Scholarship Fund, and send it to the Agriculture Alumni and Development Office, ATTN: Byers Scholarship Fund, N-212 Agricultural Science Center, University of Kentucky, Lexington, Kentucky 40546-0091.
A Gift that Broadens the Intellectual Landscape
For more than a decade, James N. MacLeod, professor in the Colleges Department of Veterinary Science, has devoted much of his research to studying degenerative arthritis in horses.
Each milestone of MacLeods academic career has helped bring this research into focus: first a degree in veterinary medicine, then a doctorate in pathology, followed by three-and-a-half years studying genetics at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, then 11 years on faculty at Cornell University.
In 2003, UK offered to MacLeod, who was by then an associate professor at Cornell, an endowed chairone of 21 endowed chairs and professorships in the College made possible through donors gifts. MacLeod accepted the Universitys offer and moved to Kentucky.
As holder of the John S. and Elizabeth A. Knight Chair, MacLeod has an impressive title, but most important to him is what the position will enable him to do.
Whats very attractive to me is the flexibility the endowment provides for unique opportunities that invariably arise in biomedical research, said MacLeod. Three critical variables are time, quality laboratory facilities, and financial resources. UK and the Knight Chair endowment have provided me with time to focus on our scientific program, a beautiful new laboratory in the Gluck Equine Research Center, and a small base of unrestricted programmatic funding.
Extramural grants will provide the majority of support for my laboratory, but unrestricted money from the endowment income will be a wonderful asset that might enable a preliminary experiment on a novel scientific idea, the ability to recruit a promising student, or the flexibility to purchase an important piece of equipment, he said.
Dr. Peter Timoney, chair of the Department of Veterinary Science, said, Recruitment of a scientist of the caliber of Professor MacLeod greatly strengthens the research program at the Gluck Center and provides representation in a field that is economically very important to the horse industry, namely that of musculosketal sciences.
Your Gifts Make a Difference
One Grateful Student at a Time

Charlee Doom 07 and Zak Danks 04 are examples of what gifts for scholarships can do.
Charlee Doom, 19, is from Elizabethtown. She is double majoring in ag economics and ag education and is paying her own way through college. Doom received $3,000 in scholarships from the College of Ag in the 2003-2004 year and additional scholarship money from other organizations.
Her family includes her aunt and uncle, who are her guardians, and an older brother.
With a 3.9 GPA in high school, a lot of academic opportunities were open to Doom. The College of Ag scholarship made the decision a lot easier, Doom said. This is the place I wanted to come, and it was a place that would help me out.
She works part-time in the Colleges Student Services office and uses the money she makes to pay for gas so she can go home on the weekends. During school breaks, she works at an Elizabethtown nursing home.
Doom may well choose a career in international business. While in high school, she bred and exported show rabbits to Japan, and she has traveled to both Japan and Australia.
I really dont believe it would be possible for me to continue my education without the scholarships, Doom said.
Zak Danks, 22, from Lewisburg, grew up on a soybean and cattle farm and looked at several schools before choosing UK, where he majored in natural resources conservation and management. Danks received the Robert B. and Helen P. Jewell Scholarship all four years, which he said sealed the deal in his decision to come to UK.
While at UK, I wanted to get as much from my course work as possible. The scholarship has allowed me to devote my time to studying and volunteering on research projects.
Money mattered too, of course. If I amassed all these expenses, it would make it that much harder on my parents. I never wanted to be a burden on them in any way, said Danks, who has a younger sister also planning to go to college.
Now, Danks is likely headed to graduate school in wildlife management or conservation biology, but hes also thinking about medical school.
