Academic Programs- ANNUAL REPORT 2009-2010

The Office of Academic Programs continued to provide students with a quality education supported by quality faculty and staff in 15 academic departments across the College of Agriculture, including the School of Human Environmental Sciences.

Student retention continues to be a high priority across the entire UK campus. The College’s retention rate for freshmen is 75 percent. Our advisors and staff in our Advising Resource Center continue to focus on retaining freshmen, as they are the most likely to leave school.

This past year the Office of Academic Programs, under the excellent leadership of Assistant Dean Larry Grabau, has focused on learning outcomes of students as the University prepares for a periodic accreditation review. But more important than accreditation is our progress on assessing student learning so that students, parents, and policy makers can be assured that an education in the College of Agriculture provides value for their investment.

The University is in the process of approving a new general education curriculum designed to provide students with a well-rounded education and to prepare them for careers in a fast changing world. The College’s academic units will be revising their curricula to be consistent with the University’s general education thrust. Providing students with internship opportunities in the real world continues to be a strength of our College.

An exciting new development this year will be the introduction of the College of Agriculture Residential Learning College. A mix of undergraduates will be participating in this learning environment whereby students in the College will share the same dorm, participate in unique programming designed for our students, and have an opportunity to take some common courses in the residence hall. Our next annual report will provide a summary of the Agriculture Residential College experience.

We thank you for your support of our college and the many ways that you provide financial, career, and other opportunities for our students. We look forward to working with you in the future.
