field image Agricultural Economics at the University of Kentucky is composed of 27 agricultural economics faculty members engaged in teaching, research, and extension, 10 area farm management extension specialists working with the Farm Business Analysis Program located throughout the Commonwealth plus a program coordinator.

Agricultural Economics department has nine staff assistants and 3-5 technical and professional staff members to provide staff support for our programs; and approximately 40 graduate students evenly split between M.S. and Ph.D.; and 200 undergraduate majors.

The department works to provide knowledge and information that will assist in solving social and economic problems important to the state, region, nation, and international community through instruction (resident and off- campus) and research.

New Kentucky Agricultural Leadership Program Class Starts Soon
A new class of the Kentucky Agricultural Leadership Program (KALP) is set to start in January 2010. KALP is an intensive 18-month program designed for young agricultural producers and agribusiness individuals from Kentucky who want to be on the “cutting edge” of decisions that affect agriculture, rural communities and society in the 21st century. The program covers issues affecting agriculture and sessions focusing on improving participant’s communication, leadership, and management skills. Program participants also have educational travel seminars to Kentucky agribusinesses, Frankfort, Washington DC, and other states and nations. The program has graduated 222 participants covering eight different classes. New Faculty
New Assistant Professor Jack Schieffer will be joining the department in June. Jack will come to us as a new Ph.D. from The Ohio State University (from which he also received his M.A.). Before Ohio State, Jack was in Texas. He received an M.B.A. from Southern Methodist University and his B.B.A. and J.D. from the University of Texas. His research and teaching interests include land-use regulation and environmental and natural resource economics. We look forward to his arrival!

Bart Peters has returned to the Kentucky Farm Business Management Program as a Specialist in the Pennyroyal Farm Analysis Group. Bart is a Caldwell County native who graduated from UK's Agricultural Economics Department with his B.S. in 1991 and his M.S. in 1994. He worked previously as a Farm Analysis Specialist in both the Bluegrass Area and the Pennyroyal Area before leaving in 2001 to work for Cundiff Farms. Since he left in 2001, Bart is married and reports that his 16-year-old daughter is learning to drive. He says she is ok going forward. However, when she is backing up . . . . Did we mention that Bart also says his hair is a bit grayer now.
