Silage

  • silage is high quality, high moisture plant material that has been fermented in a silo
  • it is convenient and economical, especially for dairy cattle, though it is increasingly used for backgrounding and finishing beef cattle
  • there are fewer harvest and field losses with silage than with hay
  • many crops are used for silage, but the most popular is corn, followed by grain sorghum
  • silages are very palatable
  • silages contain approximately 60-70% moisture as-fed
