Urea

Characteristics:

  • contains nitrogen in a form other than protein (known as Non-Protein Nitrogen)
  • fed to RUMINANTS ONLY
  • ration that includes urea should also contain a readily available energy source, such as grain
  • urea can be toxic when fed at excessive levels
  • can be fed mixed with concentrate or liquid carbohydrate sources
  • N in urea is combined with carbon skeletons from energy sources by microorganisms to build amino acids and microbial proteins
