| Candling eggs is
a method poultry farmers use to make sure their eggs do not
have anything wrong with them. To candle an egg, you simply
hold the egg up to a bright light and look through the egg. |
 |
When a poultry farmer looks
through the egg, he hopes to one of two things. If the farmer
is producing eggs for people to eat, he hopes to see a clear
liquid with a small spot in the middle. This means there is
a yolk inside, which is good to eat. |
| On the other hand,
if the farmer wants to produce chicks, he would want to see
a black spot. This means there is a chick inside. |
| Also, no matter
why the farmer is producing eggs, they do not want to see
bloodspots or cracks. |
Bloodspots are ruptured
veins inside the yolk. This means the yolk is bad and cannot
be eaten or produce a chick. Bloodspots are red spots with
gray around them.
Of course, cracks are bad,
too. Cracks keep a chick or yolk from developing correctly.
All cracked eggs are thrown away immediately.

| From the information
above, can you choose which eggs are good or should be thrown
out? |
