Chicken laying on a nest Poultry are different from other animals because they do not give birth to their young. Instead they lay eggs, and keep them warm until the chicks hatch. On some farms eggs are collected and kept in large boxes called incubators that keep the eggs warm and dry. The eggs stay in the incubators until they are hatched. Then the chicks are fed by the farmer until they are sold or kept to become mothers and fathers.
