After the tobacco plants have been set, the farmer cultivates the soil between the plants to get rid of any weeds that may have grown between the pants. Cultivating can be done with a cultivating tractor, as seen on the right, or it can be done by hand. Weeds can take away water and nutrients the tobacco plants need to grow properly.
