Now you may be asking, how does the farmer get the straw, grass or legume hay into bales or rolls? Hay bales and rolls are made through a process called hay baling. The first step to hay baling is waiting for the hay to become mature. Mature means the hay is ready to produce seed and has become the most nutritious. Mature is also the point where the hay is the correct height to bale.

The next step is cutting the hay with a sickle or disc mower. These are machines that cut the hay off next to ground so that it can be raked.
