Holstein
  • Originated in the Netherlands
  • Most popular U.S. dairy breed;
    constitutes 90% of the U.S. dairy herd
  • Characteristics:
    • large framed
    • black and white
    • 19,444 lbs of milk per lactation; 3.6% fat
    • a mature female weighs 1500 lbs while a newborn calf weighs 95 lbs.
  • Holsteins produce the most volume of milk of all dairy breeds.
