BreedsThe breed of an animal is a subdivision of its species. Animals grouped into a breed have a common origin and the same external characteristics. Most breeds have been developed by man. New breeds of livestock can be developed by complex breeding methods. A farmer may like the characteristics of two different breeds of livestock, so he may to cross the two breeds to develop the desirable characteristics in one animal. Developing a new breed of animal may take many years. Sometimes a livestock producer may decide that crossbreeding two breeds for one generation of offspring is more advantageous.
