Child Survival RatesA survival rate is the proportion of persons in a particular age group (e.g., age 15 to 19) who are still alive at the end of a specified time period (e.g., after a 5 year interval). Therefore, a child survival rate is the proportion of children in 1990 age 5 to 9 who are still alive in 1995. Survival rates tell us about the variable risks associated with persons of differing ages in a population and can also indicate differences in access to health care or other quality of life indicators such as food or adequate shelter.
