Flywheel

A flywheel is an engine part made of metal that maintains the balance and momentum of an engine. It attaches to the crankshaft and its purpose is to:

  1. smooth out the engine power impulses,
  2. can be connected to the starter for starting purposes,
  3. provide a place to mount clutch and
  4. provide extra turning force inertia when a sudden load is applied to the engine.
The flywheel often has timing marks on it to time the ignition system to the engine.
