Ordinance of 1787

The Ordinance of 1787 divided the Northwest territories into towns six miles square, each consisting of 36 sections of 640 acres. This ordinance provided the guidance for the surveying of newly acquired lands and accounts for the distinctive political boundaries in the landscape west of the Appalachian Mountains. This Ordinance set precedence for the process by which we survey the rest of the continent.
