Potato Blight

Blight is the general term to describe an onslaught of disease or other injury to plants which result in withering, slowed growth and plant death.

A virus struck potatoes in Ireland in the 1840s where they were considered a staple. This potato blight caused a widespread famine. Irish economiy was actually dependent on the potato at this time.
