Terraces such as this can be a useful tool.

Terrace System

Terraces are ridges or dykes that are created on the contour to intercept runoff from within the farm land. A terrace usually consists of a channel and a ridge on the down slope side.

In some countries where steep slopes are the only available farmland, terraces are built tall and wide enough for growing crops on the actual terrace.
