23 miles south of Lexington.
This was the beautiful home of Cassius Marcellus Clay and is interesting
both architecturally and historically. Clay was one of the Bluegrass region's
most colorful 19th-century personalities and was known as the "Lion
of White Hall,". He was an outspoken abolitionist, newspaper publisher,
U.S. Minister to Russia, and friend of Abraham Lincoln. The elaborate Italianate
mansion had central heating and indoor plumbing in the mid-19th century,
an unusual feature for its time, and is furnished with many original Clay
family items.
