Scarecrows Needed
Entry Form Due: September 22
The Arboretum is gearing up for our annual Fall event Trees, Trails & Creatures and we need your help in decorating our Trails. If you would like more information or to request an entry form, please contact The Arboretum office at (859) 257-6955.
Entry Guidelines and Awards
Everyone is encouraged to enter including: families, individuals, school groups, youth groups, businesses, etc. There will be two awards given, one for People’s Choice Award and one for the Staff Choice Award.
DELIVERY
Bring your scarecrows to The Arboretum on Sept. 30 between 9:00-4:00. All Scarecrows must be weather worthy. Please keep in mind that these will be viewed by young children.
INSTALLATION
The Arboretum will provide the post but request that you place your scarecrow. Please make sure that your scarecrow is securely fastened to the pole with rope or wire.
The Arboretum is not responsible for theft or damage of scarecrows.
Little Sprouts: Colors in the Garden (Pre-K)
Wednesday, September 3 at 10 a.m. Join us on a scavenger hunt for all the colors of the rainbow. We’ll work to create a giant color wheel of natural objects we find in the garden. Cost: $1
Little Sprouts: Peter Rabbit (Pre-K)
Wednesday, September 10 at 10 a.m. The story of Peter Rabbit will come to life as we explore the Children’s Garden for his favorite plants, from carrots to chamomile. Cost: $1
Colors from Nature: Introduction to Natural Dyeing
Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Join Roberta Burnes for an introduction to the art and science of natural dyeing. We’ll discuss dye plants and their cultivation, and then gather plant material from the garden to dye wool. Please pre-register at 859/257-9339.Cost: $12 ($10 for FOA)
Little Sprouts: Beautiful Butterflies (Pre-K)
Wednesday, September 17 at 10 a.m. Join us as we explore the art and science of butterflies. We’ll search the gardens for chrysalides, larvae, and adult butterflies. Cost: $1
Night Insect Walk (all ages)
Friday, September 19 at 7 p.m. Entomologist Blake Newton will present this fascinating program about nocturnal insects and their close relatives. As the sun sets, you be guided through the gardens in search of beetles, praying mantids, moths, and other nocturnal wonders. Please pre-register at 859/257-9339. Cost: $1

Wednesday, September 23 at 10 a.m. Leaves come in so many sizes, shapes, and colors. We’ll welcome the return of autumn with a leaf hunt. Cost: $1

What to Plant in the Fall
Tuesday, October 7 at 6:30 – 8 p.m. Whether it’s cool season bloomers like pansies or spring-flowering bulbs & perennials, fall is a great time to plant. Bob Anderson will discuss the best varieties for fall planting. Please pre-register. Cost: $5 ($4 FOA)
The Edible Garden: Putting Your Garden to Bed
Wednesday, October 8 at 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Learn what you can do now to make next year’s garden even better. We’ll discuss mulching, bed preparation, cover crops & more. Free (Donations accepted)

The Walk Across Kentucky: Focus on the Pennyrile
Thursday, October 16 at 9 a.m. – 12 noon. Explore the native grasses, shrubs, trees, and wildflowers of the Pennyrile Prairie with Curator of Native Plants Jim Lempke. Jim will discuss the natural history of the Pennyrile region and lead a ½ mile walk to this beautiful collection in The Arboretum’s Walk Across Kentucky. Please pre-register. Cost: $10 (FOA $8)

Daytrip & Hike at Floracliff Nature Sanctuary
Saturday, October 25 from 9:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Duration: Approx. 3 hours. Difficulty: Moderate.
On this hike led by Floracliff land manager Beverly James, we will talk about the history of the preserve and the role of its founder, Dr. Mary Wharton. We will also take a look at some of the trees along the way, using Wharton's "Trees and Shrubs of Kentucky" as a guide. Other features we will see include Elk Lick Falls and Elk Lick Creek. Meet at The Arboretum parking lot between 9:15 – 9:30 a.m.; we’ll carpool to Floracliff and have everyone back by 2 p.m. Bring a sack lunch, water, and sturdy footwear. Please pre-register. Cost: $5 for adults, $3 for children

Mary Wharton: Bluegrass Naturalist & Author
Thursday, October 23 at 6:30 – 8 p.m. Join biologist Bill Bryant for a retrospective on the life of Dr. Mary Wharton. Wharton was a botanist, naturalist, and author of several well-known books on Kentucky plants and natural history. Wharton worked tirelessly to preserve the unique landscape of the Bluegrass, ultimately creating Floracliff Nature Preserve in Fayette County. Dr. Bryant is Professor of Biology at Thomas More College.

Friday, November 7 at 6:30 – 8 p.m. Dr. Ronald Jones presents this fascinating look at the history, current status, and future of Kentucky’s plant life. Dr. Jones is Foundation Professor of Biological Sciences at Eastern Kentucky University and the author of the illustrated book, The Plant Life of Kentucky.
E. Lucy Braun: Pioneer Forest Ecologist
Friday, November 21 at 6:30 – 8 p.m. Ben Begley presents this overview on the life of acclaimed botanist E. Lucy Braun. Together with her sister Annette, Braun pioneered the study of forest ecology in the Eastern U.S. The program will highlight Braun’s work, arguments against her theories, and challenges currently facing Appalachian forests today. Ben Begley is Environmental Education Director at Pine Mountain Settlement School.

The lecture will be held at the Fayette County Extension Office at 1140 Red Mile Place in Lexington.
From Milwaukee, Wisconsin, nationally known gardening expert Melinda Myers is the author of numerous gardening books, and hosts “Great Lakes Gardener,” seen on PBS stations and “Melinda’s Garden Moments” which airs on network television station. She writes the twice monthly “Gardeners’ Questions” newspaper column and is a contributing editor and columnist for BIRDS & BLOOM and BACKYARD LIVING magazines. She has also written for BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS and FINE GARDENING magazines. Admission is $12/public, $10 for Master Gardeners and FOA and $5 for students.
