JUNIOR MASTER GARDENERS
Ages (8-12)
Thursdays, February 4- March 25 at 3:45-5:15 p.m.
Jr. Master Gardeners offers hands-on learning in gardening, nature, leadership and life skills. Course topics include: Plant Growth & Development, Landscape Horticulture, Soil and Water, Insects and Disease, Fruits & Nuts, Ecology & Environmental Horticulture, Vegetables & Herbs, Life Skills and Career Exploration. Students who complete assigned projects and volunteer service hours will receive a nationally-recognized certification as a Jr. Master Gardener.
Course fee includes: handbook, snack, materials and a t-shirt. Space is limited. Pre-Registration required; call 859.257.6955 to sign-up. Cost is $50 (Friends $45) and pre-payment is required to reserve your space.

March 3rd- Time to Plant -Join us for a walk in the garden to plant pea seeds and make a “seed cup” to take home and observe as your seeds emerge.
March 10th-March Winds- On a blistery day we will make pinwheels to take outside and watch how the wind makes your pinwheel spin! You’ll hear some wind poems and we’ll talk about what makes wind.
March 17th-Go Green -After a walk through the garden we will plant a “green basket” to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Do you think we will find a shamrock or pot of gold?
March 24th- Changes of Spring- Join us on a spring scavenger hunt. What exciting changes will you observe this month as the gardens have awakened? We’ll search for early sprouts, buds & blooms and craft a Spring Blossom Tree.
March 31st Discover the Wetlands
As we prepare for “April Showers”, we will walk to the wetlands letting Blue Grass PRIDE Instructor explain the movement and importance of water.

“Call to Artists” Glories of The Garden
“Glories” is an art exhibit to celebrate the world of plants found in The Arboretum and beyond. Photographs, charcoal, water colors, oils, quilts, sculptures or any type of artwork, inspired by natured are welcome to be submitted. Artists need to submit a 4 X 6 ONLY photo of their piece(s) along with a registration form to be juried, limit of two pieces. Entry fee is $5.00 per artist. (Please do not submit original(s).) Class: Winter Tree Identification

Kentucky has nearly 120 native trees and nearly 50 of these are commercially important for its wood industry. How can you learn how to identify these trees, especially in the winter without leaves? How can you learn how to identify any tree? Come and learn the process and skills needed to identify trees. Doug provides traditional forestry programs within the state to individuals young and old.
Class: Be the Solution to Water Pollution

Come and learn about how you can reduce water pollution including storm water pollution and what not to put down your drain! Esther and Darcy will focus on water quality issues in Fayette County and easy ways that you can make a difference.

Please join us for this hands-on workshop to learn the secrets for keeping healthy, happy, and beautiful indoor plants. Dr. Rebecca Schnelle of the UK horticulture department will explain and demonstrate the keys of successful houseplant care including transplanting,
watering, fertilizing, and pest control.

Event: Volunteer Orientation
Date: February 20 @ 10:00 a.m.
We ask that all our new volunteers participate in an orientation and smaller sessions will be offered throughout the year. Volunteers will get to meet other volunteers, discuss updates with the staff and find out how they can help The Arboretum get prepared for springtime. There are many great opportunities to volunteer and The Arboretum has a niche for you! We are currently looking for help in several areas including: education, membership, public relations, development, special events, newsletter, docents and grant writing.

Class: Focus on Shrubs
Date: Feb. 23 @ 1:00-4:00 p.m.

Cost: $10 ($8- Members)
Shrubs make up an important vegetative layer in natural systems and are often overlooked in residential plantings. Many of our native shrubs can be used to add beauty, interest and ecological function to small spaces. This workshop will examine a wide variety of the 70 native shrub species in the collection, including identification, site selection, propagation, pruning, and cultural practices. Participants should dress for the weather and be prepared for a moderate amount of walking (~ 1.5 miles).

Class: Creation of Homemade Concrete Containers

Have you ever wanted to make your own planters to fit special needs of plants or experiment with your own creative designs? This workshop will look at two different techniques of using concrete to make vessels suitable for outdoor potted gardens. In addition to hands-on construction, we will examine several common native plant species that thrive in shallow soil conditions. This program will take place outside.
Rob Paratley “Charles Darwin and 19th Century Botany”- Lessons from the tangled bank

Rob Paratley, UK Forestry Herbarium Curator, believes Darwin fundamentally changed the biological sciences with the publication in 1859 of On the Origin of Species.
Neil Diboll- “Prairie Plants”, Their Use in the Landscape
Date: February 10 @ 7:00 p.m.
Neil Diboll received his degree from the University of Wisconsin. Neil began his involvement with Prairie Nursery, producing native plants and seeds and designing native landscapes. He is championing the use of prairie plants, native trees, shrubs and wetland plants, in contemporary American landscapes.
Kevin Collard- “Boxwoods”, The World’s Oldest Ornamental

Kevin Collard, a horticulture graduate of Western Kentucky, owns and operates Pine View Nursery located in Leitchfield, Ky. Come hear Kevin discuss all things boxwood: plant’s history, varieties unknown, site selection, installation and maintenance. Kevin will share information necessary for the successful selection and use of boxwood in the landscape.
