Biotechnology and You Camp Participants

The East Biotechnology and You Camp was held at the North-Central site in Carlisle on August 4 and 5, 2005.  26 Youths participated, 13 female and 14 male.  Two were from Nicholas Co., three from Fayette Co., four from Pike Co. and the rest from Lewis Co.  We had three counselors at the east camp, two from Pike Co. and one from Lewis Co.  Kathy Junker, a 4-H agent from Greenup Co. took the lead in organizing the camp with the help of 4-H agents Novella Froman and Sherrill Bentley from Pike and Lewis Cos.  Two adult team leaders from Lewis Co. also helped with the camp, Diana Wilson and Bill Billman.

Another 21 Youths from western KY participated in the West Biotechnology and You Camp in Dawson Springs on September 15 and 16, 2005.  Tony Riley, a 4-H agent from Christian Co. took the lead in organizing the camp with the help of 4-H agents, counselors and volunteers from West KY.

Larry “Clay” Greunke, an Agricultural Biotechnology (ABT) undergraduate student, took the lead in the hands-on DNA science exercises and instruction at both camps.  Scott Kinison, a lab manager with Dr. Joe Chappell’s Plant Biochemistry and Molecular Biology program, provided the lead in setting up the scientific experiments and equipment.  Lauri Pulver, a Research Analyst in Dr. David Hildebrand’s Plant Biochemistry & Genetics program, and David coordinated all aspects of the camps with Kathy, Toni, Clay and Scott.  Kathy and Toni were able to get local police officers, detectives and coroners to lead the mock crime scene investigations and describe how forensic evidence is gathered and analyzed.  Dr. Keiko Tanaka in Community and Leadership Development & Sociology at UK participated in the ethics panels and selection of Dilemma Questions for the Youths to consider together with local religious leaders and David Hildebrand on the ethics panels.  We took some suggested Dilemma Questions from Iowa 4-H program in their “A Crime, A Clue and BiotechnologyTM” book and rewrote the ten we felt were most relevant and settled on giving them three dilemma cards to ponder prior to the ethics panel discussion at the West Camp.
