A presentation on the Social Science
Perspectives on Biotechnology was made in October, 2002 at the National
Science Teachers Association (NSTA) Annual Conventionin
Louisvilleby Professors Lori Gorkavitch and Valerie
Askren covered a number of ethical issues related to biotech and
agriculture. A handout for
teachers and students also covers important aspects of this
topic.
Among the important Ethical and Social Issues is the
availability of the technology to farmers in the developing
world and for subsistence crops and humanitarian purposes.
A Public Intellectual Property Resource for Agriculture (PIPRA)
has been established to make agricultural technologies more
easily available for such purposes.
The African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF)
based in Nairobi has been established to facilitate transfer and
broad application of proprietary technology to improve food
security in sub-Saharan Africa.
