United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) was created in 1862.  Its original mission was to educate and research in the areas of agriculture. Today, the USDA operates federal research laboratories and supports University-based research as well. The USDA also oversees the United States Forest Service (including the nations public recreation service) and the food stamp and commodity programs.
