False Codling Moth                                                 Egyptian Cotton Leafworm

nursery survey 2010-2011

Kentucky has several hundred licensed nurseries in the state; thus, it is an important industry and source of revenue.  Nursery inspectors employed by the Office of the State Entomologist at the University of Kentucky inspect each nursery yearly to look for pests of regulatory concern.  This survey augmented those yearly inspections by allowing for targeted surveys of several insect pests of concern and one disease, Sudden Oak Death (described under Diseases).

For the insect portion of the nursery survey we set 3 different moth traps in 20 nurseries. Each trap targets a different Lepidopteran pest of concern: Summer Fruit Tortix, False Codling Moth, and Egyptian Cottonworm.  One trap for each insect pest, baited with the appropriate lure, were in place from April/May to September/October 2010.
