On average, each person in the United States uses approximately 60 gallons of water per day in their homes. More than half of the water used inside the home each day is used in the bathroom taking showers and baths and flushing toilets. There are many things each of use can do to reduce the amount of water used in the bathroom each day. Here are a few tips:

• Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth or shaving.
• Don't use your toilet as a wastebasket.
• Fill a plastic container with water and place it inside your toilet tank.
• Limit showers to 5 minutes or less.
• Partially fill the tub for baths -- five inches of water is a good rule to follow.
• Check your toilet for leaks. Do this by placing a few drops of food coloring into your toilet tank. Let the toilet set for about one hour without using or flushing. If the color shows up in the bowl, you have a leak.
• Install flow restrictors on faucets.
• Replace older showerheads with low-flow models.
