This is __________________________________________ with the UK College of Agriculture. Taking steps to conserve water in our homes can help us lower our water bills, but did you also realize that saving water can help save money on gas and electric bills?

For public water system customers, your primary energy savings will come through reducing your use of hot water. Saving water also helps lower the cost of treating and pumping water to your home. If you have a private well, spring or cistern, reducing water use not only saves on heating costs but also on the cost of pumping water into and through your home.

The following tips can help you save water and energy.

• If your showerhead is more than 10 years old, install a new low-flow model.
• Limit your time in the shower or the amount of water in your tub.
• Intall flow restricors, or aerators, on your sink faucets to help cut your water use.
• When using your automatic dishwasher, select the water saver or energy saver cycle.
• For laundry, be sure the load size is set to match each load.
