Bored wells are often used in areas where aquifer yields are low. The benefit of bored wells is that they can hold large quantities of water, up to several hundred gallons depending on the thickness of the local aquifer.

Bored wells do have some drawbacks though.  Because of the way they are constructed using large diameter, stacked cement tiles they are highly susceptible to surface water and bacteria contamination.
