Environmental and Natural Resource Issues

• Parents want to insure that their children are safe, but hidden environmental hazards can impact children's health more quickly and seriously than adults. This lesson addresses 10 environmental health risks that can impact children's health, and provides tips for eliminating or reducing the risk from each. KY-A-Syst for the Home

• The Ky-A-Syst for the Home program is designed to help identify environmental health and safety risks in and around the home. Eleven easy to use self-assessment worksheets are available, as are teaching resources to accompany each. • Though mercury is a naturally occurring metal, it's also a potent poison that can enter our bodies through things we eat, air we breathe and through our skin. A publication addressing mercury safety is available through order entry as KAS-5. The publication addresses health hazards associated with mercury exposure, mercury in homes, mercury in schools and mercury in fish. A teaching guide, presentation slides, and activity outlines are available online at www.ca.uky.edu/enri/mercury .

 

Drinking Water

• Water can carry organisms and substances that may make people sick. Learn about some of the illness-causing substances that can be found in water and the steps you can take to help protect your family. This lesson was developed for use with limited resource, low literacy audiences, but could be used with other audiences as well. Materials include a tri-fold brochure and teaching outline.

It's a haven for a wide variety of aquatic creatures and a source of water and food for a multitude of wildlife visitors. This packaged program provides information about Kentucky 's streams, their importance to our state, and the actions you can take to protect this precious natural resource. Improving Yard and Garden Care

• Your yard and garden might be the last places you would look for pollution problems, but behind beautiful landscapes are activities that may threaten both your health and the environment. This program addresses potential sources of environmental pollution, especially water pollution, from lawns and landscapes. Participants can assess their situation and outline changes they would like to make by completing this lesson and utilizing the self-assessment publication. Simple Steps to Saving Water

• Conserving water is simple, and it's something we all can do everyday. This lesson focuses on some of the most basic water conservation practices and includes strategies for helping people reduce their water use during emergency situations.
