Research:

I am currently involved in researching a group of insects new to the laboratory and the Commonwealth of Kentucky, phlebotomine sand flies.  Sand flies are small, hairy, blood-feeding flies.  They typically occur in the tropics and subtropics and are primary vectors of a number of pathogens including Leishmania spp. parasites, the causative agents of Leishmaniasis.  In the New World, the geographic range of the genus Lutzomyia extends across most of  South America, and  north through Mexico and the coastal areas of the continental United States.  Recently, two species of sand flies have been detected in areas relatively far from where they  had previously been known to occur.  However, we do not fully understand if and how these insects are moving into our area and what specific habitats they occupy.  The overall theme and goals of my research are to learn more about the specific whereabouts of these flies in the region, discover information relating to their habits and feeding activity, and develop strategies to help cope with these insects in the event of a disease outbreak in the central United States.  I am using field based sampling methods and molecular biology tools to address some of these questions.

In my role as Senior Laboratory Technician, I conduct mosquito, sand fly, and tick surveys all across the state of Kentucky as well as identify specimens (to species) for the Louisville, KY Metro Public Health Department’s mosquito surveillance program (1,000’s-10,000’s of specimens per year).  I have also assisted in field testing of larval control products for industry.  I co-instruct the Kentucky Mosquito Identification Course and serve as a Teaching Assistant for General Entomology and Insect Biology.

Additionally, I provide technical support to the Kentucky IPM program through servicing of the Soybean Aphid suction trap and moth pheromone traps used to monitor for agricultural pests in Lexington.  I also serve as the onsite caretaker of the Entomology section of UK’s Spindletop Research station.

Previously, while attending Shawnee State University, I worked on quantifying some of the detrimental effects of run-off sewage pollution on breeding frog and toad populations in southern Ohio.
