Lloyd’s of London Continues
Support to Veterinary Science Department
LEXINGTON, Ky., (April 26, 2006) – Lloyd's of London Underwriters,
Brokers and their Kentucky Agents recently gave $45,000 in support of a
University of Kentucky equine research publication, The Equine Disease
Quarterly.

Lloyd's presents $45,000 check to UK Veterinary Science Department.
Among those at the presentation were (Left to Right): David Powell, UK
Department of Veterinary Science; Chip Harkins, president, Lloyd's Kentucky
Agents; and Roberta Dwyer, UK Department of Veterinary Science.
Since the mid-1980s, Lloyd’s of London Underwriters, Brokers and
their Kentucky Agents have given nearly $700,000 for research and other
activities of the university’s Department of Veterinary Science.
“Over the past 21 years, the Lloyd’s market has donated
to the Department of Veterinary Science, and we have been delighted to do
so,” said Julian Lloyd, chairman of Lloyd’s Livestock Committee
and Bloodstock Underwriter at Hiscox.
“Lloyd’s is the preeminent insurer of bloodstock and we insure
some of the most interesting and valuable equine risks in the world. We
are committed to supporting equine research and to providing the insurance
cover to meet client needs worldwide,” Lloyd said.
The award-winning Equine Disease Quarterly provides timely research-based
reports to the horse industry worldwide.
From an initial circulation of several hundred, it now reaches more than
18,000 readers in 87 countries and is translated into several languages.
It also is available on the Internet, and articles are regularly abstracted
by a variety of scientific and lay equine publications.
“All this would not have been possible without the steadfast financial
support of Lloyd’s and its Kentucky agents,” said David Powell,
UK equine epidemiologist.
Lloyd’s Underwriters, Lloyd’s London Livestock Brokers and
Kentucky Agents have supported the publication continuously since its inception
in 1992.
“The bloodstock insurance industry is fortunate to have the support
of eminent veterinarians worldwide, particularly in Kentucky, and we are
happy to be associated with the funding of further research and development," said
David Howard, president of Howard Global Insurance Services Ltd., an international
bloodstock insurance broker.
Each year, Lloyd’s representatives arrange a meeting in Kentucky,
and during the meeting they traditionally present the check. This year’s
meeting was held at Keeneland in Lexington.
“This marks the 21st year of the Lloyd’s grant to the University
of Kentucky, plus 10 yearly $1,000 bursaries (scholarships) to final-year
veterinarian students at various veterinary universities around the United
States,” said Lynn Jones, president of Equus/Standardbred Station
Inc.
“The idea for the grant and bursaries was formulated by Lloyd’s
Kentucky Agents Dave Parrish (Clay Ward) and Blair Scott (Scott Company),
Lloyd’s Livestock Underwriter David Chambers, Lloyd’s Broker
Roger Barklam (Hughes-Gibb), and Jack Bryans, chairman, Department of Veterinary
Science, University of Kentucky, in the spring-summer of 1985," Jones
said.
“The research programs and The Equine Disease Quarterly supported
by the yearly grants have been greatly beneficial to the thoroughbred equine
community and hopefully will continue for many years into the future,” he
said.
“Disease monitoring and reporting have never been as important as
they are today, and The Equine Disease Quarterly has proven extremely
valuable in disseminating information on equine diseases to horse industries
worldwide,” said Peter Timoney, department chair and director of UK’s
Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center.
Published four times yearly, the quarterly is available at no charge. It
is co-edited by David Powell and Roberta Dwyer of the Gluck Equine Research
Center and Neil Williams of UK’s Livestock Disease Diagnostic Center.
Lloyd’s of London is a 318-year-old institution whose members underwrite
risk in return for premiums and investment income. It is recognized as the
world’s largest thoroughbred horse insurer and, as such, remains committed
both to supporting equine research and providing the insurance cover essential
to the well-being and prosperity of bloodstock interests worldwide.
