Third Annual NEFE High School Financial Literacy Award
Megan Linger of Scott County High School in Georgetown, Kentucky received one of five 3rd place awards for her essay - "Savings -- My Springboard to Success." As part of her prize, she is awarded a check for $1,000. Megan was one of 1,820 entrants in the contest.
The purpose of the award, according to coordinator Elizabeth Schiever, is "to promote life-long financial responsibility among young people by recognizing teens who display, through their winning entries, and outstanding knowledge of money management concepts." To enter the competition, students were required to show -- through an essay, a poster, or a web site -- how saving money relates to financial literacy, why saving is important and what difference it can make in their lives both now and in the future. They were also asked to recommend tips for becoming a savvy saver and steps they could take to improve their own savings plan.
Linger will use her prize money to fund part of her education at Vanderbilt University, where she plans to major in Human and Organizational Development.
