USDA Honors Schiever, Schuchardt for High School Financial Education

WASHINGTON, June 9, 1999 --- Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman today honored two financial educators for their collaborative educational program helping high-school students develop lifelong skills in money management. Glickman presented USDA Honor Awards for Personal and Professional Excellence to Elizabeth Schiever and Jane Schuchardt. Schiever is director with the Denver-based National Endowment for Financial Education. Schuchardt is a national program leader in USDA's Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service, based in Washington, DC.

Schiever and Schuchardt led the distribution of a national High School Financial Planning Program which reaches about 250,000 students in more than 3,000 U.S. high schools each year. The program is operated by the National Endowment for Financial Education in partnership with USDA's Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service, and involves nearly all of the Land-grant university-based Cooperative Extension System. The program has become a hallmark of government and non-profit educational partnership, and has received considerable attention from consumer education organizations and in the news. A recently completed systematic 18-month evaluation demonstrates that the program is effective in helping youth learn lifelong skills in money management.

Glickman presented Schiever and Schuchardt with their Honor Awards during the 53rd annual U.S. Department of Agriculture Honor Awards Ceremony. "I am pleased to recognize these dedicated public servants," Glickman said. "USDA has a proud heritage of serving the American people since 1862, touching the lives of every citizen every day. The work accomplishments of the employees honored today continues that heritage. With my congratulations go my thanks for a job well done."
