The Eden Shale Research Farm is located in Owen County, near the city of Owenton, Kentucky. The farm was established in 1955 on 950 acres of land purchased by the University of Kentucky from donated funds. Individuals, businesses and government agencies contributed to the purchase of the land. The research farm was established as a result of requests for agriculture research from farmers in Owen County to the University of Kentucky concerning the unique challenges of farming that region of the state.
Early work at the research farm focused on beef forage systems, horticulture crops, and organic crops adaptable to the growing conditions of the region. Today, the research continues on beef cattle, forages, horticulture and switch grass for biomass production.
