Thesis: Movements & habitat selection of raccoons in a fragmented Illinois landscape
Advisor: Dr. Thomas Nelson
Academic
Interests:
I am interested in wildlife ecology, management and conservation. My current research focuses on the population assessment of reintroduced and remnant populations of river otters (Lutra canadensis) in Kentucky. The objectives of my study are 1) determine the distribution and relative abundance of river otters in Kentucky, 2) determine population demographics, including reproductive characteristics of otters in Kentucky, 3) test the validity/application of the Missouri river otter population model for Kentucky; use model to develop a harvest protocol for otters in the state, and 4) develop habitat models for river otters in Kentucky. Research techniques include bridge field surveys for otter sign, winter aerial surveys for snow tracks, and carcass analysis.

Recent
Projects:
For my master’s research, I investigated the movements and habitat selection of raccoons in a fragmented Illinois landscape. I trapped and collared raccoons for the purpose of monitoring daily movements via radio-telemetry during the avian nesting season. Extensive habitat analyses and scent-post stations were used to assess the impact of raccoons on nesting birds.
