Selling timber may be the most important part of managing your woodlands and is usually very costly to the uninformed. Timber sales can be used to improve your woodland and generate income. In this session, we will cover the timber sale steps a woodland owner should take to receive a fair price, protect their interests, and where assistance can be found.

So, What’s Involved In Woodland Management – and Why and How Should I Do It?  This session will provide an overview of the process of managing a woodland, with discussions about identifying your ownership goals and objectives, the process of inventorying your woodlands resources, and the development of an appropriate management strategy to accomplish your ownership objectives. 


Crop Tree Release

The crop tree concept is one that has wide appeal and provides woodland owners with a simple strategy to improve the health and vigor of their woodlands. The presentation will provide and overview of crop tree management and provide examples of how this management strategy can be implemented. We will also focus both on economic impacts of crop tree management as well as how to implement the crop tree system in a wide range of woodland conditions.


How to Evaluate What’s in Your Woodland and
Use the Information for Management

There is some basic information that you need to make informed decisions about how to manage your woodland. This includes such things as boundary locations, the size and species of trees and other vegetation present, the age structure of the forest, the health and vigor of the trees, and soil characteristics. The information is critical whether you are managing for timber, wildlife, recreation, aesthetics, or other resources. This section will explore woodland inventory, emphasizing what needs to be evaluated and how.


Tree Planting Getting a New Forest Started

There’s more to tree planting than just putting the trees in the ground roots down.  This session will examine the entire tree planting process from identifying the species of
tree(s) that will meet your planting objectives and grow on the site, through ordering and caring for the seedlings once they arrive, proper planting technique, and care of the young trees after they are planted.
