Lawsonia intracellularis.
Lawsonia intracellularis is the cause of Equine Proliferative Enteropathy (EPE) an emerging disease of horses which has been reported worldwide. Recent research has shown weanlings that were clinically affected with EPE sell for 68% less as yearlings at public sale when compared with other yearlings by the same sire. Diagnosis and preventative measures remain poorly defined and new information is needed to identify those factors that lead to infections before effective preventative strategies can be developed. This presentation will review our current state of knowledge and highlight some recent findings regarding the epidemiology and pathology of this disease, as well as present recent data on the development of an experimental infection model.

Exploring Fetal Life In-Utero in the Mare:
Placental Patho-physiology.
The placenta is a unique organ with amazingly diverse anatomical structure and function between species. Diseases affecting “the placental interface” (degenerative endometrial changes, placental infections, abnormalities of vascular perfusion, etc.) are common and impact fetal growth and development. The effects on the pregnancy range from subtle to profound. Research procedures have been developed and used for several decades to quantitatively monitor and study physiology of the ovine fetus, uterus and placenta. We have used some of these techniques to conduct pilot studies on equine uterine and placental blood flow in utero in pregnant mares for periods up to several weeks. The hemodynamics of vascular perfusion of the foal’s placental (chorioallantoic) membranes and maternal blood flow to the gravid uterus were found to be dynamic and in many regards, unexpected. “Feasibility of concept” was demonstrated that long-term studies on the gravid uterus, the fetus and placenta, can be done, and that this experimental approach can provide a window onto life in-utero in the pregnant mare.
