Obese mares may exhibit estrous cycles during the winter months rather than enter anestrous.  In addition, these mares exhibit highly abnormal reproductive cycles throughout the regular breeding season, characterized by long intervals between successive ovulations.  Further, obese mares exhibit significant decreases in insulin sensitivity compared to non-obese mares.

This project tests the hypothesis that obesity in these horses is a chronic inflammatory condition with higher circulating levels of inflammatory molecules than in non-obese animals. This elevated inflammation may lead to the development of the later complications mentioned above.

This research will hopefully lead to increased knowledge and awareness of the causes of the conditions associated with obesity and insulin resistance in the horse and stem further research into possible preventative and therapeutic treatments.
