RESEARCH INTERESTSIdentification and Physical Mapping of Important Genes in the Horse |

A main goal of the International Equine Genome Mapping Workshop is to increasing the density of the horse gene map thereby increasing its effectiveness for identifying genes causing inherited genetic diseases. We are collaborating with researchers in the U.S. and Eurasia to anchor and orient markers on the horse radiation hybrid and synteny maps (Chowdhary et al. 2003; Perrocheau et al., in press). Of particular interest are genes involved in the horse’s immune response to infectious disease such as West Nile Virus (Takahashi et al. 2004; Wagner et al. 2004; Tallmadge et al. 2003 and in press; Perelygin et al. 2005). Other markers we have mapped enable researchers to use the horse gene map to identify inherited diseases such as SCID (Bailey et al. 1997) and glycogen storage disease IV (Ward et al. 2003). |
