Current studies emphasize the importance of equine disease surveillance and reporting at the local, national and international levels. Examples include monitoring the annual incidence of equine herpes virus abortion (EHV-1) on farms in central Kentucky, the national incidence of West Nile virus infection and Vesicular Stomatitis, and outbreaks of equine influenza occurring internationally. Surveillance continues on investigating the etiology of acute outbreaks of upper respiratory disease among horses on farms and stables in Kentucky.

The information derived from these studies is regularly communicated to veterinarians, the equine industry and other interested parties via the Equine Disease Quarterly and various international equine disease reporting organizations.

Ms Karin Bosh a graduate student is presently undertaking a PhD project examining the influence of management and veterinary practices on mare reproductive efficiency among approximately 1000 Thoroughbred mares on 13 farms in central Kentucky.
