Report from Livestock Disease Diagnostic

From December 30, 2001 to January 19, 2002, 77 equine abortions had
been submitted to the Livestock Disease Diagnostic Center (LDDC) for examination.
During this same time period in 2001, 75 equine abortions had been submitted
for examination. During this same time period from 1996-2000 a mean
of 67.4 equine abortions per year had been submitted for examination.

The above information relates to accessions to the LDDC from all breeds
of horses. Information on the overall population of mares bred in Kentucky
is not available. However the number of Thoroughbred mares bred in
Kentucky annually is published in The Jockey Club's Fact Book. Thoroughbreds
represent 66% of equine accessions submitted to the LDDC. The number bred
in Kentucky in 1996 was 18,407; 1997-17,600; 1998-18,739;
1999-19,731; 2000-20,680 and for 2001 reported as of January
25-20,635.
The figures will be updated on a weekly basis during the foaling season.
