searchEach year, seniors in the Merchandising, Apparel and Textiles Program prepare student portfolios as part of their coursework. The portfolios showcase some of the assignments and projects completed by the MAT majors during their college career, primarily in merchandising courses.
Students are introduced to the major through Introduction to Merchandising (MAT 114) which examines industry structures to facilitate the development, manufacturing, marketing and merchandising of goods and services in the domestic and international marketplace. In Textiles for Consumers (MAT 120), students study textiles with an emphasis on consumer applications. Aesthetics in Merchandising (MAT 237) introduces students to design and aesthetic principles. A survey of promotional procedures of retail and wholesale, including visual merchandising, special event production, and public relations is also examined. In order to understand the meanings of dress in a cultural context, Dress and Culture (MAT 247) explores the social, cultural, physical, and psychological factors which influence apparel and use of dress in contemporary societies.
Courses in merchandising including Merchandise Planning and Control (MAT 315), Problem Solving in Merchandising (MAT 350), Merchandising Strategy Analysis (MAT 414), Economics of Merchandise Sourcing (MAT 425) and Specification and Evaluation of Textiles and Apparel (MAT 515), provide a strong foundation for understanding all aspects of the retail industry. International Merchandising (MAT 470) and Electronic Retailing (MAT 570) are courses that are taught in an on-line format. Upper level electives can include History of Costume, 20th Century Fashion, Textiles for Interiors, Retail Entrepreneurship, Textiles for Interiors and Customer Relationship Issues in the Service Industry. Study tours to both New York and Paris have been offered. Students are also encouraged to do study abroad to more completely understand the global nature of the industry.
Students are required to complete an internship experience. Please see http://www.ca.uky.edu/hes/index.php?p=178 for details on internship and listing of companies that MAT students have interned at, as well as quotes from some interns.
Some scholarships are available for academically qualified students through the Student Service Office.
