National Center for Farmworker Health, Inc.

English - The National Center for Farmworker Health (NCFH), established in 1974, is dedicated to improving the health status of farmworker families by providing information services and products to a network of more than 500 migrant health center service sites in the United States as well as other organizations and individuals serving the farmworker population.

Bilingual - Farmworker News is part of the National Center for Farmworker Health.

This portfolio of low literacy, bilingual newsletters was developed for use as a patient education tool to supplement and enhance existing teaching methods in migrant health centers and in outreach programs. It was developed with the intention of providing health care practitioners an easy, low cost method for providing health education to low literacy patients who speak English or Spanish. These materials may be printed and used free of charge.

Migrant Clinician Network --- a network of clinicians across the country who serve migrant and seasonal farmworkers.

Bilingual - MCN also provides bilingual brochures, products and tools for the use by farmworkers who are mobile. MCN offers a variety of benefits to its clinician members including continuing education courses, professional publications, and foreign language trainings, all with the goal of culturally appropriate healthcare. This might be useful information for Extension to pass on to it partner health organization who are looking for resources to serve their rural Latino community.

Rural Women's Health Project

Spanish - The Rural Woman's Health Project produces culturally and language-appropriate materials which emphasize communities working together to find realistic solutions to their common obstacles. Therefore, all of the RWHP projects are developed with the community of people they will serve. Two essential aspects of our material development include the modeling of good health behaviors and the importance of "each one, teach one." There is an emphasis on the photonovela as an inexpensive medium to give health information.

National Diabetes Education Program (Paso a Paso, Step by Step)

English/Spanish - This web site from National Diabetes Education Program is a specific campaign to prevent diabetes and is targeted for Latinos. There are 30 million Hispanic/Latinos living in the United States, about 2 million have been diagnosed with diabetes. Over 10 percent of all Hispanic Americans have diabetes. On average, Hispanic Americans are 1.9 times more likely to have diabetes than non-Hispanic whites of similar age. Nearly half of Hispanic children born in the year 2000 are likely to develop diabetes within their lives. Materials on this website are in Spanish and English and includes brochures, a music CD to encourage movement through dancing, radio and public service announcements. All the materials are mostly free and are not copyrighted.

Hablamos Juntos

English - Hablamos Juntos is a project funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Their mission is to improve communication between health care providers and their patients with limited English proficiency. Their goal is to develop affordable models for health care organization to offer language services. The website provides considerable information on % change population at the county level and a list serve that will keep people updated on new models of addressing the language barrier for Hispanics/Latinos.

American Diabetes Association - La Diabetes y Los Latinos

Spanish - This site with diabetes information was developed to address the special issues of the Latino community, which has a higher risk for developing diabetes. They also have a bilingual magazine, Diabetes Forecast en Espanol, published quarterly that can be ordered for free. It contains a risk test for developing diabetes. Lists of important tests and checkups needed for diabetes prevention or control, advice on avoiding heart disease, the leading side effect of diabetes and, of course , recipes.

Kentucky Resources for Health Access

KCHIP Spanish Hotline 1+(800) 622-53977.

This hotline provides a link for the Kentucky Children's Health Insurance Program (KCHIP) a comprehensive health insurance program for children up to 18 years old and families up to 200% above the Federal Poverty Program. This is a service of University of Kentucky Farmworker Outreach Program and Medicaid. The hotline is staffed with bilingual, bicultural information specialists. Some of the services that the Spanish Hotline can provide:

provide KCHIP applications in Spanish.

bilingual information specialist.

assist with filling out applications.

answer questions regarding KCHIP.

act as a mediator (when needed) between Department of Community Based Services (DCBS) office and the Spanish-speaking client.

will assist with setting up appointments with the DCBS office.

networking on behalf of client...

The American Diabetes Association joined with the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association to announce a joint initiative that will empower Americans to lower their risk of cancer, diabetes, heart disease and stroke by following a single set of recommendations.

Combined, the four chronic diseases account for nearly two out of every three deaths in United States.

The initiative marks the first time that three of the nation's biggest non-profit health agencies have worked together toward a common goal.

"Everyday Choices for a Healthier Life" is a three-year campaign based on four preventive strategies:

Consume a healthy diet as a key component to achieving and maintaining a healthy body weight

Be physically active

Don't smoke, and avoid tobacco smoke

See a physician to assess your personal health risks

The development of the HEEL program was made possible by Senator Mitch McConnell with funds earmarked for the University of Kentucky, College of Agriculture, Lexington, KY and budgeted through the CSREES/USDA Federal Administration.
