INSTRUCTIONS FOR BURNING A POSSIBILITIES CD

The "UK Extension's Universe of Possibilities" CD is available for you to use, free-of-charge, for non-commercial, educational purposes. Although it may not be mass-produced, you may reproduce a reasonable number of copies, as legitimately needed, for educational and inspirational programs. You may not reproduce copies to be distributed to participants in any program or sell copies to any person(s) or other entity(ies).

In addition to the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service's copyright for the program as a whole, individual images and musical works are held by their respective copyright owners and are used by permission. Please respect all copyrights associated with this program and its various units and elements.

This CD includes all ten Flash presentations, as well as a wide range of resources from the "UK Extension's Universe of Possibilities" website and a connection to the website. Resources include a series of ten publications in both long and short versions, 75 media articles, facilitator's guide, teaching outlines, PowerPoint presentations, evaluation instruments, group activities, related links, quotations, etc.

The Flash presentations may be viewed separately or in continuous play. The continuous play feature is convenient for use in waiting rooms and other places where people gather.

A. Downloading the program to your hard drive:

  1. Click on Download CD Presentation . Warning! This file is 90MB, it may take hours to download on 56K (phone dial-up) connection. Downloading will take a few minutes on DSL and faster connections. "Readytoburn" window will open and you will see a "WP Readytoburn-copy" folder icon.
  2. Click on "Extract all files." This opens the "Extraction Wizard" window.
  3. Follow instructions to extract files. When selecting a folder to extract files to, you might want to choose your Desktop.

B. Burning the program onto CD:

We tested the CD burning process using two programs, Windows Explorer and Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 Basic. The following instructions will lead you through the process of burning the "UK Extension's Universe of Possibilities" CD with either of these programs. However, other programs also may be used; please refer to relevant software documentation for directions.

Note: "UK Extension's Universe of Possibilities" CD is designed to AUTO-START when inserted into CD-Drive. Please simply insert CD into your CD-Drive and relax. CD will start automatically within max 10-15 seconds.

Using Windows Explorer :

  1. To open Windows Explorer, right click on your Start button, then left click on "Explore."
  2. Using the menu on the left side of the Windows Explorer program, find the "WP-Ready-to-burn-copy" folder wherever you saved it (See A3, above). Click on that folder to open it.
  3. On the right side of the screen, you should now see the contents of the folder, including subfolders. Highlight all icons. Then right click anywhere in the highlighted area. Left click on "Copy."
  4. Place a blank CD-R disk in your CD drive.
  5. Using the left side of Windows Explorer, find and open your CD drive. There should then be no icons or files displayed on the right, as the disk is empty.
  6. On the blank right side of the screen, right click, then left click on "Paste." Windows Explorer will copy all relevant files to the CD.
  7. Exit Windows Explorer.
  8. Now that you have copied the files to the CD, the next step is to write them to the CD. To begin, left click on your Start button, open "My Computer," and then open your CD drive.
  9. On the right side of the screen you should see "Files Ready to Be Written to the CD." On the top left, you should see "CD Writing Tasks." Under "CD Writing Tasks," click on "Write these files to CD."
  10. This opens the CD Writing Wizard. Follow instructions to write the files to your CD-R. First choose a CD name. (You might choose "Possibilities," but it's up to you.) When finished, it will automatically eject your CD. Click "Finish" to close the Wizard program.
  11. Now your disk should be ready to use. To make sure, reinsert your CD and play. It will take a minute to load. Please be patient! Also remember to turn your sound on. Enjoy!

Using Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 Basic :

  1. Place a blank CD-R in your CD drive.
  2. A Windows pop-up box will come up, listing CD options. Select "Create a CD using Roxio Easy CD Creator." Click "OK."
  3. The next box allows you to "Select a Project." Highlight "make a data CD," then click on "data CD project."
  4. Now your window should show "Untitled Data CD Project - Easy CD Creator." Under "Select source files," find the "WP-Readytoburn-copy" folder where you saved it (see A3, above).
  5. Highlight the "WP-Readytoburn-copy" folder, then click on "Add." The folder then will be duplicated onto the lower-right section of the window.
  6. Since this is all you need on your CD, click on "Record." A "Record CD Setup" box will pop up. Make sure the drive displayed under "Select CD-R Drive" is correct. If everything else is set the way you want it, click on "Start Recording." It will take several minutes to copy.
  7. Once it says, "CD created successfully," click "OK."
  8. The next box will say, "Save CD Project changes to" wherever you originally saved the "WP-Readytoburn-copy" folder. Click "Yes." It will provide you the opportunity to save it again wherever you choose.
  9. Now you can exit Easy CD Creator.
  10. The next step is to "copy" and "write" the files to the CD so that it will play. Click on your Start button, select "My Computer," and open your CD drive.
  11. It should now show "Files Currently on the CD" and, under that, the "WP-Readytoburn-copy" folder. Double-click on the folder to open.
  12. Under "Files Currently on the CD," it will now show all files and folders associated with the program. Highlight them all, then click "Copy the selected items." Copy them to your CD. This will take a few minutes.
  13. Now, with the files still highlighted, click "Write these files to CD." This opens the CD Writing Wizard. Follow instructions to write the files to your CD-R. First choose a CD name. (You might choose "Possibilities," but it's up to you.) When finished, it will automatically eject your CD. Click "Finish" to close the Wizard program.
  14. Now your disk should be ready to use. To make sure, reinsert your CD and play. It will take a minute to load. Please be patient! Also remember to turn your sound on. Enjoy!

C.Viewing and printing the jewel case insert:

  1. Click on Download Jewel Case Insert to download a PDF of the “UK Extension's Universe of Possibilities” jewel case insert. Adobe Acrobat Reader, already on most computers, is needed in order to view this PDF.
(Acrobat Reader is available as a free download from Adobe’s website. If you do not already have the program, click on the “Adobe Acrobat” icon at the bottom of this page and follow their instructions to download the program.)
  2. Go to your File menu, click on “Page Setup,” and choose “Landscape” (under “Orientation” in the middle of the box). Then click “OK.”
  3. Next, select “Print” from the File menu or click on the printer icon in the top toolbar. Choose your preferred printer in the dialogue box, preferably a color printer if you have one. Make sure the “Scale to paper size” is set to “No Scaling,” select the appropriate properties such as correct paper type and desired print quality, then click “OK” to print.
  4. After printing the insert, trim the excess edges (everything outside the crop marks). You might want to use a paper cutter, rather than scissors, to keep the edges straight. Fold the insert vertically down the middle and slide it in the front window of the jewel case. The insert layout is designed to fit a standard CD jewel case.
