Merchandising, Apparel & Textiles

Graduate Program
The graduate program in Merchandising, Apparel and Textiles offers an M.S. degree. The Program emphases for graduate study and research in textiles and clothing include:
  • Consumer Behavior
  • Consumer Textiles/Quality Assurance
  • Historic Textiles and Costume
  • Cultural and Social Issues of Dress
  • Textile and Apparel Merchandising/Management
It is expected that the applicant have an undergraduate degree in merchandising, apparel, or textiles or a closely related field. A concentration in Merchandising, Apparel, and Textiles leads to a Master of Science in Merchandising, Apparel and Textiles. A combination of course work, independent study, and research experience is available to provide students with a program of study designed for career goals. Graduate emphasis is individualized to meet each student's career interests. Interested individuals must apply both to the Graduate School and to the Department of Merchandising, Apparel and Textiles. An overall GPA of at least 2.75 in all undergraduate work and a 3.0 in undergraduate major is required. Students are encouraged to apply for admission as early as possible. To be competitive for assistantships, students should apply no later than March 15 for the fall semester, and October 15 for the following spring semester. For domestic students, all application materials must be submitted no later than one month prior to the start of the term for which the applicant intends to apply. Graduate assistantships and scholarship opportunities are available on a competitive basis.
Curriculum
The student works with a faculty advisor and committee to select a thesis or non-thesis project and appropriate supporting coursework.

Travel Opportunities

Graduate students in MAT annually participate in the Southeast Graduate Consortium. The consortium is held each year for the purpose of providing masters students experience in presenting their research to a regional group of peers. Institutions who participate include: University of North Carolina at Greensboro, University of Tennessee, Florida State University, Auburn University, University of Georgia, and University of Kentucky.
