Doctoral Program
The Department of Family Studies offers the Ph.D. in Family Studies.   The doctoral program is a research-based curriculum that provides a solid grounding in family science.  Individuals completing the Ph.D. in Family Studies will  be qualified for positions at colleges and universities; program evaluation positions in public and private settings focusing on the family; and administrative positions in public and private human services prevention and intervention settings.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
Financial assistance is available for doctoral students and includes teaching and research assistantship opportunities.  

Tuition support is awarded to students with assistantship assignments and to qualified students without such assignments for the out-of-state portion of their tuition.

THE CURRILCULUM
Each student will build an individualized curriculum based on their current knowledge base and desired Specialization.  All students will have a curriculum organized into:

  • Family Science
  • Research Methods
  • Areas of Specialization include
    • Family Economics
    • Human Development
  • Dissertation Research

Application Information
Students who have earned a master's degree may apply to the Ph.D. program. Applicants must submit a Family Studies Departmental Application including a statement of clearly developed academic and research goals for the Ph.D. degree.  Application packets are available.  Successful applicants will have a 3.2 GPA on previous graduate level work.  GRE scores of 1100 on the verbal and quantitative, and a 4.5 on the analytical portions of the exam are expected.  Previous paid and unpaid research experience is desired.
