Title The difference between a want and a need

Impact Statement

The Boyd County Cooperative Extension Service presented a program titled “Dollars and Sense”. Fifth grade students from three school districts were the target audience for this hands-on, economics lesson. All students were given the same amount of money and instructed to visit various booths and purchase an item from each. As in the real world, a wide array of products were available, making appropriate consumer selections difficult. Students quickly discovered the difference between “a want” and “a need”. Members learn to draw appropriate conclusions for managing personal needs.

David Greene, Principal of Hatcher Elementary attended the event and wrote an editioral to the local newspaper stating, “The “Dollars and Sense” program was a very positive experience for our students. The program was well planned, organized and highly educational. Our students had the opportunity to apply many practical living skills they learned in the classroom.”

Each student completed a survey at the end of the program. One student wrote, “ I learned to try to avoid all the advertising and to buy what I really need not just want” . 426 students received this lesson in consumerism.
