Title Beginning Sewing, Quilting, Crochet Classes

Impact Statement

This year with the military deployment of Fort Campbell to Iraq, many of the dependents wanted to learn skills that would occupy their time while their spouse/dads were gone. They were also interested in skills that they could enjoy for a lifetime.

By working with the Recreation Centers on Fort Campbell, the Christian County Extension Service and volunteers offered classes Basic Sewing, Quilting and Crocheting. There were a total of 20 in the sewing classes and 10 for the quilting/crochet classes. These classes lasted for six weeks each.

Each basic sewing participant learned to read a pattern, select fabric, cut out and construct and garment. Each quilting and crochet student leaned the basic skills to make an afghan.

Besides the immeasurable value of each individual learning a skill and occupying their time while their family member was deployed, the monetary value of these items was $630.

The Family and Consumer Sciences Agent and 4 volunteers taught these classes. The value of the volunteer’s time was $1238.
