Title Youth-Adult Partnerships & N4-HYDC

Impact Statement

A youth-adult partnership encompasses relationships where a partnership is achieved between youth and adults. Youth and adults have equal chances in utilizing skills, decision making, mutual learning and independently carrying out tasks to reach common goals according to Youth-Adult Partnerships: Are You There Yet? by Kenneth Jones, 2006. An outcome of the Barren County 4-H Centennial Conversation was the need for more youth-adult partnerships in the community. A Barren County 4-H leader had the opportunity to address this issues as she served as the first representative from Kentucky on the National 4-H Youth Directions Council (N4-HYDC). The main focus for the National Council for 2005-06 was developing youth-adult partnerships in 4-H and our communities. After receiving training on the national level, the N4-HYDC Representative conducted county, multi-county, district and state wide workshops and programs to emphasize the importance of true youth-adult partnerships. She also prepared newspaper articles and television programs.

The program has impacted the local level where more youth, especially teens, are participating in meetings and asking to become involved on committees and programs. The youth are serving as chairman and members of many 4-H Council and community committees. The Barren County 4-H program was the recipient of the Engaging Youth Services Grant which includes a true youth-adult partnership in planning and executing their project. The N4-HYDC Representative has served as a mentor to the group. One of the school administrators commended the Barren County
4-H Program and N4-HYDC representative on their leadership efforts to get the students more involved in decision making for their future. Their continued commitment to become involved at the community level is evident as two 4-H teens will be serving on the Barren County Fair Board for 2006-07.
