Title 4-H FUN Camp

Impact Statement

As the name implies the 4-H FUN Camp was a great opportunity for Barren County 4-H program to shine in a fun atmosphere! The Barren County 4-H Program wanted to emphasize our 4-H core curriculum and increase awareness of the "FUN" educational activities that 4-H has to offer. A committee of Barren County 4-H leaders wrote and received a $1000 grant from the Barren- Hart- Metcalfe KY ASAP Board Drug Free Communities Coalition. The committee decided the best way to accomplish their goals was to implement "4-H FUN Day Camp for youth ages 5 to 13. The five day camps were held at the Barren County Fairgrounds from 9:00 to 3:00 daily. The Barren County 4-H Council partnered with the Barren County Board of Education Summer Feeding Program to provide lunch and two snacks for the youth and volunteers during the day camp. Modern Woodman 0f America provided door prizes for the 4-H FUN Camp. Flyers were sent to all of the elementary schools, newspaper articles, newsletters and flyers placed throughout the community invited the youth to attend one or all five days of the day camp at a cost of $5.00 per day. The 4-H leaders recruited thirty-eight speakers and workshop presenters for the classes utilizing many of our adult and teen 4-H volunteers. All of the 4-H core content areas were emphasized using activities outlined in the 4-H curriculum. The youth enjoyed the hands-on activities and made many items that could be exhibited at the Barren County Fair 4-H Floral Hall. In an evaluation given to the 360 youth attending, 97% had a learning experience, 98% discovered that 4-H had more to offer than they had realized, 99% plan to return in the future. All participants received 4-H t-shirts, which has served as a great marketing tool. The parents are still talking about the great experience that their children had and are requesting dates for 2007. The volunteers who worked with the program are already making plans for next year.
