Impact Statement
Leadership Development
Bullitt County Goat Producers have continued their stellar leadership enhancement, continuing on from last year’s success. The parliamentary procedure training added enabled volunteers to further their leadership. One moved to Vice President and another became President of the Board of Directors of the Bullitt County Goat Producers and a third to become Vice-President of the Board. Of the volunteers developed and conducted a class on record keeping in Excel for the goat producers. With the development of new personnel in the goat producers, past leaders were encouraged to advance to the state level. The local President became Vice-President for Meat Goats for Kentucky Goat Producers Association and writes articles for the Farmers’ Pride Newspaper in the goat edition. She and other members have taken classes in Meat goat judging in Georgia and joined a group traveling to New Holland, PA with Ken Andies of Kentucky State University. She was also an invited guest at the Goat Summitt held in Elizabethtown, KY. With this group she is helping to develop a goat program for the state. She has worked with Dr. Gil Myers to organize other county goat organizations. Working with Central Kentucky Goat Producers, she has taken classes in A-I and served as vice-president of that organization. Each time she has taken training she has returned to the local organization with new ideas to benefit local producers. Another member of the local organization, Mary Weber has began judging 4-H goat shows both dairy and market (meat) classes with Purdue University in IN. She has become a local 4-H leader and started a local club after taking the 4-H Livestock certification training, sponsored by the Ag Council. In November of 2005, she worked with the Louisville Agriculture Club with tours for grade school students at the North American International Expo. After attending the Missouri Meat Goat Symposium in December, she has assisted with meat goat classes and is a regular contributor to the monthly Extension Ag newsletter. Mary has also presented a workshop “Showmanship and Showing Goats” at the Floyd County 4-H Days in New Albany, IN. Not satisfied with just working with goats, Mary has taken an interest in other areas of Extension, by contributing to an organic gardening presentation and serving as Secretary to the Ag Council and Secretary of the County Extension Council, treasurer of the Bullitt County Goat Producers, administrator of the grant monies from Phase I, Ag Diverfication Fund and as the Bullitt County representative to the Central Kentucky Goat Producers. Her leadership has also expanded to such areas as the Budget Committee of the Extension Council, Long Range Planning committee, and the WWII Remembrance Committee.
