Impact Statement

Goat Producers

After attending the Missouri Meat Goat symposium, Ag Agent presented a series of classes on Meat Goats. The coalition of Extension Service, Department of Ag and Bullitt County Stockyard has helped producers improve quality of market animals, increased prices from $1.09 to $1.35 live weight per pound at the local auction, decreased losses from 20 head per herd (40 kids born) to less than 5(40 kids born) due to improved nutrition for does and improved parasite management. Additionally, the Kentucky Department of Ag now conducts graded goat sales at the local stockyard each month, further increasing revenues for local producers.

A Regional Goat Field Day held 11 August 2005 was developed and carried out by the leadership of BC Goat Producers in conjunction with the Extension Office. Classes included Fencing, Parasities, Pregnancy Checking Does, Grading Demostration, Meat Goat Industry Overview and Cheese Production. Participants attended from across the state and from Indiana. Producers later indicated improved heard health from the parasite class. $36,000 has been invested within the county in improved production methods and herd health due to classes conducted through the Extension Office.
